8 Ounces a Day of POM Wonderful 100% pomegranate juice may slow progression of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT) in patients with elevated cardiovascular disease risk factors, study finds.According to a clinical study released in The American Journal of Cardiology, a daily serving of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice may decrease the progression of arterial plaque in patients with elevated cardiovascular disease risk factors.

The study was intended to see if POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice may slow the progression of intima-media thickness of the carotid artery (CIMT) in patients with moderate coronary heart disease risk. At 18 months, there was no reduction in the progression of CIMT in the group as a whole. However, further analysis revealed an indication that the rate of CIMT progression slowed in nearly one third of patients, those with elevated cardiovascular disease risk factors.

This study was funded by POM Wonderful.

Conducted at Radiant Research in Chicago, IL, and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial involved 289 subjects at varying degrees of moderate heart disease risk who consumed 8 ounces per day of either POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice or a placebo beverage. The trial's endpoint was the increase in CIMT, a measurement which includes both the artery wall itself as well as accumulated plaque. CIMT measurements were recorded at both 12 and 18 months after the treatment began.

The composite measurement of CIMT showed a significantly smaller value at 12 months in the pomegranate juice group compared to the control group (0.79 vs 0.81 mm, p = 0.022), although this difference was no longer significant at the end of the treatment period (0.79 vs 0.80 mm, p = 0.168). The results from post hoc exploratory analyses, which should be interpreted with caution, suggest that rate of CIMT progression may have been slowed in high-risk subgroups. Specifically, the authors found statistically lower CIMT values within several subgroups of patients with elevated cardiovascular risk factors, including high total triglycerides as well as low HDL cholesterol as compared to total cholesterol and triglycerides.

"This study was initiated based on the compelling results from pre-clinical studies and an initial clinical trial," said lead researcher Michael H. Davidson, MD. "We are excited with the outcome of this larger study because while we did not see a reduction in the group as a whole, there is an indication that the rate of CIMT progression slowed in subgroups of patients characterized by more rapid CIMT progression."In conclusion, the authors call for these preliminary findings to be investigated in future studies, because "consumption of pomegranate juice is very safe; thus demonstration of a benefit on atherosclerotic disease progression, even in a subset of the population, would have important public health implications."The publication of this study is the most recent in series of studies evaluating the potential benefits of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice on human health. In 1998 POM Wonderful initiated a world class medical research program to investigate the Wonderful variety pomegranate.

To date, POM Wonderful has funded $32 million in research, which has involved a number of top scientists from leading universities around the world, including a Nobel Laureate. In one of the more bizarre celebrity feuds, fashion desiner Stella McCartney and Bono’s wife Alison Hewson are engaged in a down and dirty fight over the word “nude.”

Hewson, 47, and her business partner Bryan Meehan, 40, founder of organic food chain Fresh And Wild are suing McCartney’s company over the use of the word nude in her new fragrance Stella Nude.

Unfortunately, Newson and Meehan also have a company called Nude Skincare which boasts model Helena Christensen among its devotees.

"Nude Skincare is suing for compensation, not with anything to do with the new scent but because of branding and the use of the word nude,” an insider told The UK Daily Mail newspaper.

“It would be quite funny if it weren’t being taken so seriously – there are other perfumes with similar names after all,” adds the insider.

But the nude theme is a large part of 37-year-old McCartney’s fashion brand and she has already created a collection of designs based on nude flesh tones which will feature models parading in them from head to toe.

A writ has already been issued but McCartney’s company is hoping to settle the matter out of court and with the new scent coming-out in September the bottle is a nude color to go with the theme.

The case will come before the Chancery Division in London which deals in infringement and copyright claims -- let’s hope Sir Paul and Bono can get around the peace table and thrash out a deal before then!

ATHENS (Reuters) - Nine British women were facing prostitution charges after being arrested at the weekend for taking part in an oral sex competition in the Greek holiday island of Zakynthos, police said on Monday.

Six British and six Greek men, including two bar owners, were also charged in the incident, which took place at Laganas beach in the south of the Ionian island, which lies off the west coast of mainland Greece, police said.

The women, who came to the popular resort on holiday, had been paid to take part in the competition, which was video recorded and was to be posted on the Internet, police said.

The men were charged with encouraging obscene behavior.

In recent years, Laganas has established itself as one of Greece's most popular destinations for twenty-something holidaymakers and is known for its wild party scene.

Around 15 million people -- a fifth of them British -- visit the eastern Mediterranean country each year, drawn by its soaring summer temperatures, azure waters and sandy beaches.

Start-up costs should be capitalized, and these costs should not be amortized for more than 40 years. Accountants should use Generally Accepted Accounting Principles when accounting for revenues. Auditors must be careful not to place too high a value on start-up companies. Related-party transactions should be disclosed, and research and development costs should be expensed in the period in which they occurred. Auditors can help improve the quality of financial reports by clarifying the definition of significant revenues and providing information about the organization's development stage and any uncertainties.

Entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in this country. Technological advances have led to the birth of new and exciting industries. With this activity has come the opportunity for CPAs to provide accounting, audit, and management advisory services to start-up ventures. There is also increased risk because a CPA's reports are often used to raise capital, and start-up ventures often have a considerable chance of failure.

In 1975, SFAS 7, "Accounting and Reporting by Development Stage Enterprises," was issued to clarify and standardize reporting practices of development stage companies. Several publications on this topic appeared shortly thereafter. However, the literature has been sparse since then.

THE NATURE OF A DEVELOPMENT STAGE ENTERPRISE

SFAS 7 defines a development stage enterprise as a company that:

* Devotes substantially all its efforts to establishing a new business and has not begun planned principal operations; or
* Has begun operations, but has not generated significant revenue.
A development stage enterprise devotes most of its efforts to financial planning; raising capital; exploring for natural resources; developing natural resources; research and development; establishing sources of supply; acquiring property, plant, equipment, or other operating assets, such as mineral rights; recruiting and training personnel; developing markets; and starting up production.

A company that is e xpanding or developing a new product line would not qualify as a development stage company because it is not devoting most of its efforts to establishing the business. However, a subsidiary of an established firm could be so considered if it issues separate financial statements. The consolidated financial statements would follow reporting practices of an established enterprise.

Before SFAS 7, many development stage companies capitalized their start-up losses and amortized the cumulative losses against revenues of later periods. SFAS 7 acknowledges that development stage companies are involved in different activities than other enterprises, but requires that they issue the same basic financial statements as an established operating enterprise following GAAP; see Exhibit 1 for additional requirements. SFAS 7 does not change industry standards that are considered GAAP. In certain industries, such as oil and gas, sttart-up costs related to exploration and drilling are capitalized. There is little written in accounting literature on start-up costs, and the FASB has not addressed the issue. One Board member saw the need to dissent on the matter of start-up costs.

Investor and creditor needs are different for a development stage company. While its statements reporting cumulative information give an investor a summary of activity to date, users also need information about future prospects. In addition, while GAAP provide guidance on non-cash asset valuation and reporting of current and potential obligations, these transactions usually are more prevalent, material, and harder for the development stage company to value.

People.com said the lawsuit is for $10 million, and alleges that reps from the nudey video empire plied her with alcohol before getting to flash her breasts when she was only 17.

But who knows what the outcome of this lawsuit will be. Maybe Ashley Dupre will win, maybe the judge will rule in favour of Girls Gone Wild and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get to write an article about something other than underage nudity sometime soon. That way it wouldn’t take as long to scrub the shame from our skin at the end of the day. Some days we think we’ll never get clean.

According to the 2007 National Technology Readiness survey, 71 percent of adults are interested in green technology. Word of mouth is the key to green tech marketing, reports an Environmental Leader article. The piece says the market has the potential to earn $104 billion in sales this year, and the people most committed to the environment — 10 percent of adult consumers — are also very enthusiastic about technology. The segment skews to younger, social-network savvy adults who blog and advise others.

This Wall Street Journal interview with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner John Doerr reveals that Silicon Valley venture capitalists are banking big on green technology. Kleiner Perkins has invested $250 million of its $700 million portfolio in green tech. According to Doerr, VCs are investing heavily in companies developing alternative fuels, fuel-efficient devices and other “clean” technologies such as Omega 5 oil greentech.

Bio-fuel companies are having a hard time at the markets while green cosmetics are thriving

Beware of These Strong Buys

It's an understatement to say that investors are excited by the opportunities in green tech.

John Doerr, one of the world's most successful venture capitalists, called cleantech the "biggest economic opportunity of this century." One of the best-performing stocks of 2007 was none other than First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR), up an incredible 795%. And recent data from the Cleantech Group (reported by CNET News) showed that VC investment in green tech increased 44% in 2007 -- from $3.6 billion to nearly $5.2 billion.

Triple back-up-the-truck booyah, right?

Not so fast.

A centerpiece of the recent Roth Capital investment conference in California was an "Investing in Green Tech" expert panel. Its goal was ostensibly to reveal how to make obscene profits by investing in green tech stocks.

But it did the exact opposite.

As the panel went on, it became clear that even these experts -- people who now devote their careers to advancing "green" technologies -- weren't quite sure what the perfect green tech policy, incentive, initiative, or technology looked like. But who could blame them?

Wrap your head around this...First, there's significant government involvement in the sector that distorts market forces. That should be an immediate red flag for prospective investors. Whenever the government is involved in something, there can be no certainty.Second, green tech development cycles are becoming increasingly rapid. That means that what seems like a great idea today could be obsolete tomorrow. For an investor in an early stage company, that means your product may never get to market -- so you're staring down a significant risk of total capital loss.

Finally, we still haven't decided what the goal of green tech is. Is it to increase efficiency and reduce demand? If that happens, energy prices will drop and consumption will just rise again. Is it to build cleaner generation and consumption technologies? Unfortunately, every alternative solution has a shortcoming. For wind, it's the fact that wind tends not to blow during hot days when demand is highest. Plus, windmills aren't always welcome additions to a community's skyline. And then there's the equipment bottleneck along the solar supply chain. There just doesn't seem to be enough silicon or tellurium to go around.

Buyer bewareYet investors continue to throw money at the sector, and they remain optimistic about current investment opportunities. Just look at the analyst ratings for a few well-known green tech stocks:

This comment from Lisa Bicker of CleanTech San Diego, however, should send you running: "The capital markets for these types of investments are very frothy right now...yet there are few productive investments available."

A case study

For evidence of what happens when frothy markets meet a lack of productive investments, take a look at what's happened to ethanol stocks over the past two years. Once thought to be a product that could make the United States both greener and more energy independent, recent research has revealed that ethanol production may actually offset or, even worse, outweigh the greenhouse gas reductions caused by ethanol use. What's more, the combination of rising corn prices and farmers growing more corn and less of everything else has led to higher food prices across the board.

Of course, demand for ethanol wasn't necessarily stoked by market forces. The government, politicians who coveted the Iowa primary, and several powerful interest groups were very much involved in making it a green-tech priority.

All of this combined to make ethanol stocks a very bad investment back when they were being touted in the spring of 2006. For example, on April 5, 2006, analyst Michael Brush wrote about a few "ethanol stocks to get revved up about." Here is the performance of those picks since his article was published:

I am not against saving the world.

This is not to say that energy companies pursuing green solutions are bad companies, or that they're misguided. The world is clearly pursuing cleaner energy or greener solutions, even as the demand for energy around the world rises. A company like Fuel-Tech, which can help power plants reduce their emissions, will clearly benefit.

Still, investors can turn even the best company into a bad buy by paying the wrong price. That's a real risk in the green tech sector, where outcomes are uncertain and valuations "frothy."

If you do it, do it right

Nonetheless, there's clearly a wide market opportunity for green tech companies in today's economy -- and a wide market opportunity is one of the core traits we look for in the small companies we recommend to investors in our Motley Fool Hidden Gems service. So while we're somewhat wary of the sector, we're also taking a long hard look at it.

Governing that research are a few tips gleaned from those Roth Conference panelists:

Focus on green initiatives like Omega 5 or nutraceuticals that offer immediate return on investment to customers. They're most likely to be widely adopted.

Peak demand for electricity remains an enormous challenge, which makes distributed generation, energy storage, and advanced metering technologies extremely interesting to the large utilities that will be making many of the spending choices going forward.

Hybrid vehicles. They have clear consumer appeal, and they're one of the few ways for individuals to participate tangibly in emissions reduction.

Don't overpay.

So while we're looking hard at green tech at Motley Fool Hidden Gems, and we have Fuel-Tech on our Watch List, we won't recommend any stock at the expense of a compelling valuation.

When it comes to buying green tech stocks, you should do the same.

Pomegranate juice shows possible diabetes benefits

A new study suggests that pomegranate juice could offer health benefits for diabetics, despite the juice containing significant sugar concentrations. Omega 5 oil does not contain the sugar concentration of the pomegranaet juice.

The findings, although only from a small trial in humans, are likely to encourage further consumption of pomegranate juice, where sales have rocketed in the last year thanks to media coverage of the antioxidant-rich fruit that has commonly been linked to improved heart health, as well as claims that pomegranate could protect against prostate cancer and slows cartilage loss in arthritis.

One surprising finding, said lead researcher Professor Michael Aviram of from the Rappaport Family Institute for Research in the Medical Sciences and Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel, was that the sugars contained in pomegranate juice - although similar in content to those found in other fruit juices - did not worsen diabetes disease parameters (including blood sugar levels) in patients, but in fact cut the risk of atherosclerosis.

"In most juices, sugars are present in free - and harmful - forms," explained Aviram. "In pomegranate juice, however, the sugars are attached to unique antioxidants, which actually make these sugars protective against atherosclerosis."

According to British charity, Diabetes UK, constantly raised glucose levels intensify the furring and hardening of blood vessels (atherosclerosis), which leads to cardiovascular disease and stroke.

An estimated 19 million people are affected by diabetes in the EU 25, equal to four per cent of the total population. This figure is projected to increase to 26 million by 2030.

In the US, there are over 20 million people with diabetes, equal to seven per cent of the population. The total costs are thought to be as much as $132 billion, with $92 billion being direct costs from medication, according to 2002 American Diabetes Association figures.

The new research, published in the August 2006 issue of the journal Atherosclerosis (Vol. 187, pp. 363-371), reports that subjects who drank 50 ml of pomegranate juice (containing 1.5 millimoles of polyphenols) every day for three months experienced a reduced risk for atherosclerosis.

The juice was freshly squeezed from handpicked fruit, and the juice was filtered, pasteurised and concentrated. The antioxidant composition included 1979 milligrams per litre (mg/L) of tannins, 384 mg/L of anthocyanins, and 121 mg/L of ellagic acid derivatives.

Ten type-2 diabetics and 10 healthy controls were recruited to the study, and after three months of supplementation, the researchers found that, while pomegranate juice consumption did not affect blood levels of glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride, it did significantly reduce serum lipid peroxides and TBARS levels by 56 and 28 per cent.

Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) is a measure of the extent of oxidation of the LDL-cholesterol, which has been reported to be a major part of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, and subsequently heart disease.

It was also reported by Aviram and his colleagues that so-called macrophage cells in the diabetics had a faster uptake of this oxidised LDL than the healthy controls (37 per cent faster), but supplementation with pomegranate juice significantly decreased this uptake by 39 per cent.
"We thus conclude that pomegranate juice consumption by diabetic patients did not worsen the diabetic parameters, but rather resulted in anti-oxidative effects on serum and macrophages, which could contribute to attenuation of atherosclerosis development in these patients," wrote the researchers.

In a follow-on study, to be published in the September issue of Atherosclerosis (Vol. 188, pp. 68-76), Aviram and his colleagues report that the antioxidant activity of the pomegranate juice cannot be attributed solely to the polyphenol content of the fruit, but that some credit must also go to the sugar content.

"[The] antioxidative/antiatherogenic properties of the pomegranate juice were mainly attributed to the high content, as well as the unique type of pomegranate polyphenols," reports the second article.

"However, the capacity of pomegranate juice to decrease macrophages peroxide levels was greater than the of effect of the pomegranate juice purified polyphenols… the pomegranate juice sugar fraction may also contribute to the antioxidative properties."

The UK's leading retailer Tesco said last year that sales of pomegranate juice were up 300 per cent since the start of the 2005, and it was now selling close to 500,000 litres per week.
