POMEGA5 is a leading eco-beauty product line using Omega 5 oil green technology

Luther Gerson explains the benefits of Omega 5 oil

Eco-minded beauty products that are good for you too

Eco-minded chemical-free products can help you look and feel good.
Cosmetic manufactures are making ecological strides to appeal to customers who want to purchase products from companies with a conscience.

Here's a list of products that can do more than make you good:

All proceeds from Aveda's $10"Light the Way" organic Bulgarian lavender candlego to the Global Greengrants Fund to support grassroots clean water projects around the world. (The company is, year round, known for its regular use of organic and sustainable packaging.) The candle is available through April. Go to Aveda.comor Aveda at South Coast Plaza.

Tweezerman's "Go Green" mini slant tweezers, $10 at drugstore.com, have gone small to save on production costs. Packaging is made from 100 percent recycled paper and printed with soy-based inks. One tree will be planted and $1 will be donated to the Arbor Day Foundation for every purchase.
POMEGA5. It surprised us when we searched for “pomegranate” in our list of archives that we really haven’t done a feature on them yet. We’ve mentioned them as a flavor for lollipops, tea and even a cocktail delight but nothing in specific detail. Maybe it’s because the benefits of pomegranates are so widely known these days that we think you, our dear readers, are educated enough about them. Here’s one thing we bet you didn’t know: because pomegranate seed oil is one of the most powerful immune-support compounds ever discovered in nature, it’s now being used for skin care as well. Pomega5 is the skin care industry’s first complete line of organic pomegranate seed oil nutritional supplements and therapeutic skin care.

By using the highest quality, 100% pure cold-pressed pomegranate seed oil, Pomega5 has created a unique line of products that soothe, moisturize and heal dry, irritated skin which is perfect for us. We tried the Healing Cleansing Bar which is a soap-free cleanser made with olive oil, organic pomegranate seed oil, herbs and essential oils. We liked how clean our skin felt without feeling tight. We followed this with the Healing Cream which was equally soothing. Again, made with 100% organic pomegranate oil, it’s also known for benefits such as restoring and healing in addition to preventing anti-aging. Oh…and did we mention the smell? Yuuummy. The only aspect of Pomega5 to improve upon that this TreeHugger could find was their packaging. The products came in an over-sized box filled with Styrofoam peanuts. But not to worry – we followed the How to Green Your Recycling advice and reused the box and recycled those pesky things. ::Pomega5

Cargo PlantLove lipstick, $20 at Sephora, comes in a tube made from corn that can be composted by placing it inside your green waste bin. The outer packing is embedded with wildflower seeds that sprout colorful blooms when planted.

Physicians Formula Organic ware is the first makeup available in the states that is Ecocert-certified, which means it's rigorously inspected by a European body accredited to guarantee products are at least 95 percent organic. Compacts are made from recycled paper and with 93 percent less plastic than their regularly packaged products. Blush and bronzer compacts are $11.95-$13.95 at drugstore.com.

Kiehl's Superbly Restorative Preparations body lotion and dry oil, $30-$35, is made with organic Moroccan Argan Oil, the first fairly traded ingredient used in any of its products. Women at the Moroccan Targanine Cooperative preserve the Argan forest by planting trees and harvesting Argan nuts. On Earth Day, the first 50 customers to return an empty Kiehl's bottle to the South Coast Plaza store for recycling will receive a canvas Kiehl's tote bag.

Jessica Cosmetics voluntarily removed hazardous chemicals from all of its formula nail polishes four years ago. Formaldehyde, already banned in Sweden and Japan, is classified as a possible carcinogen by the FDA. The polish is also free of toluene and dibutyl phthalate, known as a potential developmental and reproductive toxin. Colors are $6.50 at jessicacosmetics.com.

There's little regulation of beauty and skin care claims on packaging. Since the FDA doesn't police what goes into cosmetics, consumers who are concerned about hazardous ingredients really have to educate themselves. Organic products are no different. Here are common organic certifications.
